Colour Choice

How important is colour choice for your external facade ?

In the heart of the scorching Australian summers, every degree matters regarding your home’s internal temperature. An intriguing factor influencing this temperature is the colour of your house’s exterior.

Darker colours absorb more heat and may lead to higher interior temperatures, Conversely, lighter colours reflect more heat and help maintain a cooler indoor environment, especially in regions with hot summers.

Absorbed heat can penetrate the house’s interior, potentially elevating the overall temperature.

Wall colour’s impact on house temperature in Australia is intricately linked to the insulation and building materials present in a property. Insulation reduces heat transfer through walls, ceilings, and floors. Well-insulated homes with insulated siding can help maintain a stable indoor temperature.

In the Australian climate, where heat can be intense, choosing light-coloured wall surface can contribute to better heat management within your home. By reflecting more sunlight, these colours assist in keeping surfaces cooler, which can ultimately help maintain a more comfortable indoor temperature.

In warmer regions like Queensland, opting for lighter wall colours can help reflect sunlight and prevent heat build-up, thus keeping interiors cooler. Conversely, darker hues can absorb more sunlight in cooler areas such as Tasmania, warming the house.

FAQs on Our Colour Range

What are the most popular exterior house colours in Australia?

Some of the most popular exterior house colours in Australia include white, light grey, cream, ivory, vanilla and soft beige. These colours suit a wide range of architectural styles and perform well in hot climates by reflecting more sunlight. Formplex offers a variety of neutral and contemporary colour options across its weatherboard ranges, making it easy to achieve a modern or traditional look.

Does house colour affect indoor temperature?

Yes. Exterior wall colour can influence how much heat a home absorbs or reflects. Darker colours tend to absorb more heat, which can increase indoor temperatures, while lighter colours reflect sunlight and help keep homes cooler. Choosing a lighter coloured weatherboard can contribute to better temperature control, especially in warmer Australian regions.

Are light or dark exterior colours better for hot climates?

Lighter exterior colours are generally better for hot climates because they reflect more solar radiation and reduce heat absorption. Colours such as white, light grey, cream and vanilla are popular choices for homes in warmer areas of Australia. Darker colours may be better suited to cooler regions where additional warmth is beneficial.

How do I choose the best colour for my home’s exterior?

Start by considering your climate, roof colour, window frames, surrounding environment and personal style. Neutral tones provide a timeless look, while greys and modern shades offer a contemporary finish. Consulting with a cladding specialist can help you select a colour that complements your home and performs well in your local conditions.

What colour options are available for Formplex vinyl weatherboards?

Formplex vinyl weatherboards are available in a wide range of colours, including White, Vanilla Cream, Grey, Pale Green, Gold, Glade, Linen, Ivory tones, as well as modern options like Dune and Satin Grey. Can I match paint colours to Formplex weatherboards?

Yes. Formplex provides colour tint formulas that allow wet paint to be matched closely to its vinyl weatherboards. These formulas are developed using Dulux colour matching systems and help ensure trims, doors and other surfaces coordinate seamlessly with your cladding.

Do lighter coloured weatherboards show dirt easily?

High-quality vinyl weatherboards are designed to resist staining and fading. While lighter colours may show dust more than darker shades, they are easy to clean with mild detergent and water, helping maintain their appearance over time.

Are Formplex colours UV resistant?

Yes. Formplex weatherboards are manufactured with UV-stabilised materials that help reduce fading and maintain colour consistency in harsh Australian conditions. This ensures your exterior stays looking good for many years.

Can I create a custom colour scheme for my home?

Absolutely. You can mix and match weatherboard colours with roof, window and door finishes to create a personalised exterior look. The Formplex team can assist with colour scheme ideas to achieve a cohesive and visually appealing result.

Do colour choices affect resale value?
